How Many Fuel Injectors Does My Car Have?
Number
of Fuel Injectors in a Car:
One of the most frequently asked
questions is how many fuel injectors does a car has? The answer depends upon
the number of cylinders. This is because a car has one fuel injector per
cylinder. To further make it clear, consider this. If a car has a four-cylinder
engine, then it would have four fuel injectors. Similarly, a V6 or straight-six
powered car would have six fuel injectors and a V8 or a V10 would have eight or
ten fuel injectors respectively. In short, the number of fuel injectors varies
by car. The same holds true for pickup trucks and SUVs. The total number of
fuel injectors in a pickup or an SUV would depend on its engine. But as a rule
of thumb, it is wise to assume that most will be holding six or eight fuel
injectors since the majority of them are powered by either a V6 or a V8 engine.
Though, some newer ones may hold only four injectors as they have a
turbocharged four-cylinder engine.
Understanding
Fuel Injector Failure:
Like any other component in a
car, fuel injectors are also prone to failure. It is understandable considering
they remain operational throughout each second a car’s engine is running.
Modern gasoline engines equipped with GDI (gasoline direct injection) have
incredibly high injection pressures. Fuel injector-related trouble codes are
usually P0171 or P0174. These codes are associated with clogged fuel injectors
which can sometimes be rectified by cleaning the fuel injectors. Other times
the fuel injectors are damaged or clogged beyond repair. In such instances, it
becomes necessary to replace fuel injectors. However, don’t confuse fuel
injector circuit codes (P0200, P0203, P0204) with clogged/choked fuel injectors
as they are related to faulty wiring or ECU-related issues
Replacing
Fuel Injectors:
In case your car has faulty fuel
injectors, the first task is to assess the number of fuel injectors before
replacing them. The next step involves replacing the fuel injectors. First,
remove the wires attached to them and unscrew the mounting bolts. Afterwards,
you can simply pop them out and replace them. It is important to remember to
replace fuel injectors with OEM-compliant or OEM injectors. You may be able to
replace your worn-out fuel injectors with cheap ones, but they won't work right
and eventually, you will have to replace them with the original ones. The
genuine injectors may be pricey, but they won’t cause any issues and honestly,
they are worth their price tag in the long run.
