The Johnson Outboard Motor traces its roots back to the early 20th century when two brothers, Lou and Harry Evinrude, set out to revolutionize the way boats were powered. In 1909, Evinrude invented the first practical and commercially successful outboard motor. However, it was the merger of the Evinrude company with the Outboard Motor Corporation in 1935 that gave birth to the Johnson brand as we know it today.
