Although Zenith was founded in 1910 in Great
Britain, the company is better known for its fantastic Zenith-Stromberg
carburetors introduced in the mid-60s. These innovative carburetors were
designed by two visioners, Dennis Barbet (from Triumph) and Harry Cartwright
(Zenith), to challenge the monopoly that its legendary rival, S.U. had on the
design of constant depression carburetors. Their bet paid off, as the
Zenith-Stromberg carburetors were used from 1965 to 1980 by a huge number of
automakers such as Humber, Jaguar, Saab, Volvo, Hillman, Arrow, Chrysler,
Talbot, Sunbeam, Plymouth, and Triumph. The advanced variable venturi design
used by Zenith-Stromberg carburetors proved better than their SU counterparts
in some use cases, as was demonstrated by the CD-150 and CDS-175 models used in
the performance-oriented, triple-carbureted Holden Torana GTR-XU. All in all,
despite the opinion of the detractors of constant depression systems,
Zenith-Stromberg carburetors have stood the test of time, and they are still
manufactured in limited quantities for special applications such as classic vehicles.
