If your Carter W-O carburetor only runs when the choke is partially closed, it's almost always a sign that the engine is running too lean — meaning not enough fuel is being mixed with the air. Closing the choke restricts air, which temporarily enriches the mixture and compensates for the issue. Here are the most common causes:

Common Causes for Lean Running in a Carter W-O:

1. Vacuum Leak

  • Air is entering the engine without going through the carb, leaning out the mixture.

  • Check intake manifold gasket, carb base gasket, vacuum lines, and throttle shaft bushings.

  • Spray carb cleaner around suspected areas while idling — if RPM changes, you've found the leak. Don't forget the throttle shaft. A worn shaft can cause a vacuum leak.

2. Clogged Idle or Main Jet

  • If jets are partially blocked, not enough fuel can reach the engine.

  • Dirt, varnish, or debris in the float bowl can clog the tiny orifices. If the vehicle sits for months at a time the gas may have turned to varnish coating the inside of the carburetor, fuel lines & gas tank.

  • Solution: remove, inspect, and clean jets with carb cleaner and compressed air.

3. Low Float Level

  • If the float is set too low, the fuel level in the bowl is insufficient.

  • This limits the amount of fuel available to the jets and causes lean conditions.

  • Check and reset the float height to factory specs (usually around 1/4" for Carter W-O).

4. Fuel Delivery Problem

  • Weak fuel pump, restricted fuel line, or clogged filter may starve the carb.

  • Check for consistent fuel delivery at the inlet. Pressure should be around 4.5 to 5.5 PSI.

5. Air Bleeds or Passages Blocked

  • Tiny passages in the carb body regulate air-fuel mixture.

  • If blocked, fuel flow may be disrupted, especially at idle or low speed.

 What to Do First:

  1. Check for vacuum leaks around the base and manifold.

  2. Verify float level and fuel pressure.

  3. Remove and clean jets and all internal fuel passages.

  4. Make sure the throttle plates are not open too far (which bypasses the idle circuit).

  5. If you're using a fuel filter, ensure it isn’t clogged or restricting flow.
