If your Holley 1904 carburetor only runs with the choke ON, it’s telling you loud and clear: it’s starving for fuel in the idle or main circuit. Closing the choke cuts airflow, forcing a richer mixture by pulling more fuel through any passage that’s still open — this compensates for whatever’s blocked or misadjusted.

Holley 1904 Runs Only w/Choke

Main Reasons a Holley 1904 Runs Only With the Choke Closed

Float Level Is Too Low

  • The float sets the fuel level in the bowl.

  • If the float is set too low, there isn’t enough fuel for the idle and main circuits to pull properly.

  • The 1904 is especially sensitive — too low by even 1/16" can lean out the whole circuit.

  • Fix: Check the factory float height spec (typically about 1/4" to 5/16" for the 1904). If you lowered it “just because” — bring it back to spec. We like to set the float to be level when carb is upside down.

Idle Passages or Jets Are Blocked

  • The idle circuit has very small passages.

  • Old varnish or debris can block these, even after soaking.

  • If the idle jet or the tiny holes in the throttle body are clogged, the carb can’t supply fuel at low throttle.

  • Fix: Remove idle mixture screw. Spray carb cleaner through the screw hole — you should see spray come out into the carb throat near the throttle plate. If not, use thin wire (tag wire, bristle) to clear the passages.

Vacuum Leak

  • If there’s an air leak at the carb base, throttle shaft, intake gasket, or vacuum lines, extra air dilutes the fuel mix.

  • The choke compensates by restricting air so the mixture can stay rich enough to run.

  • Fix: Spray carb cleaner around the carb base, throttle shaft, and vacuum fittings while running. RPM change means you’ve got a leak to seal.

Throttle Plates Open Too Far

  • If the curb idle speed screw is turned in too much, the throttle plates open too far.

  • This bypasses the idle circuit — so the carb pulls fuel from the main circuit instead, which needs higher airflow than idle provides.

  • The choke helps by creating more vacuum to pull fuel through the main circuit even at low RPM.

  • Fix: Back off the idle speed screw. Plates should be just slightly cracked open at idle.

Key Sign:

When you can only run with the choke on, you have enough fuel supply to the bowl — but it’s not being metered properly into the engine at idle.

What To Do Right Now

  • Check float level — adjust to exact spec.
  • Clean and verify idle passages — make sure they flow.
  • Spray for vacuum leaks.
  • Confirm correct base gasket.
  • Set throttle plates for correct idle position.

Bottom Line:
A Holley 1904 that only runs with the choke on is telling you it’s lean at idle — fix the float, clear the idle passages, and you’ll fix the problem.
