Causes of High-Speed Lack of Power in a Quadrajet

1. Secondary Air Valve Too Tight

  • If the secondary air valve spring is adjusted too tight, the secondaries won’t open fully.

  • Result: the carb runs only on the primaries at high RPM, starving the engine for air/fuel.

  • Fix: Loosen the spring slightly so the air doors open smoothly under load.

2. Fuel Delivery Problems

  • Weak fuel pump or restricted fuel filter can’t keep up with demand at high RPM. 5 lbs.

  • Collapsed rubber fuel hose near the tank or carb inlet restriction.

  • Low float level starving the main jets at high speed.

  • Fix: Verify pump output (volume & pressure), replace filters, and re-set float level.

3. Secondary Metering Rods / Hanger Issues

  • Wrong hanger or bent hanger keeping rods too deep in the jets.

  • Secondary rods sticking, worn, or mismatched to the application.

  • Fix: Check rod movement, ensure the correct rods/hanger for your carb number.

4. Power Piston Circuit Malfunction

  • Power piston stuck down (due to varnish, dirt, or a bad spring) won’t enrich the mixture at load.

  • Causes a lean high-speed condition = no power.

  • Fix: Clean bore, replace piston spring if weak.

5. Main Well or Secondary Fuel Restrictions

  • Blocked fuel passages in the main well tubes or secondary discharge nozzles.

  • Gaskets misaligned after rebuild (common on Quadrajets).

  • Fix: Disassemble, verify passages with carb spray/air, and use correct gasket.

6. Vacuum or Air Leaks

  • Secondary throttle shaft bushings leaking air.

  • Warped carb base or intake gasket leak.

  • At high RPM, vacuum leaks lean out the mixture.

  • Fix: Check with carb cleaner spray or vacuum gauge.

7. Ignition Timing / Advance Issues

  • Weak or sticking mechanical advance in distributor.

  • Not enough total timing at high RPM feels like carb starvation.

  • Fix: Verify total timing and mechanical advance operation before chasing carb.

 Quick Diagnostic Flow

  1. Road test ? confirm lack of power only at WOT/high speed.

  2. Check fuel delivery first (filter, pump, float).

  3. Verify secondary air valve spring tension ? loosen slightly if too tight.

  4. Inspect secondary rods & hanger ? correct and moving freely.

  5. Double-check ignition timing and advance.

Bottom line: A Quadrajet lacking top-end power is most often fuel starvation (float level/pump/filter) or secondaries not opening/enriching properly.
