Does your Holley 140 bog down or hesitate when accelerating?
This can be caused by the distributor advance, or the accelerator pump circuit in the carburetor.

TESTING YOUR ACCELERATOR PUMP CIRCUIT
Holley 1940 1 Barrel Carburetor Accelerator Pump

Testing your accelerator pump circuit.

  • The 1st thing to do is check the pump circuit while the carburetor is still on the engine. Remove the air cleaner (engine off), and look down the carburetor while pumping the throttle. You should see a squirt of gas coming from the main discharge anytime you pump the gas.
  • Next take the top off the carburetor body and remove the accelerator pump.
  • Fill the pump well with fluid. Mineral spirits work well.
  • Press down on the pump. You should get fluid out of the main discharge (where the drift punch is). No fluid? You have a clogged circuit.
  • While holding down on the discharge check weight (use a brass punch), Push the plunger down. You should feel some resistance. No resistance? Try seating the check ball by gently tapping on the check ball with a drift punch and hammer.

The main discharge has a check ball, then the check weight. If you don’t have a check weight, use a 2nd ball as the weight.
