Zenith 267 Choke System

Zenith 267 Carburetor Choke System Guide

The choke system on your Zenith 267 carburetor is essential for easy cold starts and smooth engine warm-up. A properly working choke ensures the engine gets the richer fuel mixture it needs when it’s cold, preventing hard starting, stalling, and rough idling.

How the Zenith 267 Choke System Works

When you start a cold engine, it needs more fuel and less air to fire up and run until it warms up. The Zenith 267 uses a choke valve — a butterfly plate — that partially closes the air intake at startup. Here’s how it operates:

  • When the choke is closed, airflow into the carburetor is restricted.

  • This creates a stronger vacuum at the venturi, pulling in more fuel.

  • As the engine warms up, the choke slowly opens to allow normal airflow and leaner fuel mix for efficient running.

The Zenith 267 may use a manual choke cable, an automatic thermostatic coil, or a choke pull-off mechanism depending on your setup.

Common Zenith 267 Choke Problems

1. Hard Cold Starts:

  • If the choke plate won’t fully close, the fuel mixture stays too lean for starting.

  • This could be due to a sticky linkage, bent rod, or misadjusted choke cable.

2. Engine Stalls or Runs Rough After Start:

  • If the choke stays closed too long, it makes the mixture too rich, flooding the engine.

  • This can cause black smoke, rough idle, or stalling.

3. Poor Warm-Engine Performance:

  • If the choke plate doesn’t open fully after warm-up, the engine will continue running too rich, hurting fuel economy and fouling spark plugs.

How to Check and Adjust the Zenith 267 Choke

  • Make sure the choke plate closes fully when the engine is cold.

  • Start the engine and watch that the choke begins to open as the engine warms.

  • Check the choke linkage for smooth movement with no sticking.

  • If you have a manual choke, verify that the cable moves freely from full close to full open.

  • Inspect the choke spring or thermostatic coil if equipped — replace if weak or broken.

Maintaining the Choke System

  • Keep the choke shaft, plate, and linkage clean and lightly lubricated.

  • Always replace worn springs or damaged linkage parts during a rebuild.

  • Use a high-quality rebuild kit with ethanol-safe gaskets and parts to keep the choke system working properly.

Why the Choke System Matters

A properly adjusted and maintained choke system on your Zenith 267 carburetor keeps your engine starting reliably in cold weather, reduces stalling, and ensures a smooth warm-up cycle. Without it, cold starting becomes much harder, and engine wear increases due to poor combustion.
