Does fuel leakage from the pump lifter link where it connects to the throttle shaft arm mean the bowl is being filled too high and is spilling over?

Watch a short video about the lifter link leaking.

Fuel leakage from the pump lifter link area on a Carter YF carburetor, where it connects to the throttle shaft arm, does strongly indicate that the fuel bowl is overfilling—and yes, it likely means fuel is spilling over internally.

Here's what it likely means:

  • The lifter link should remain dry during normal operation.

  • If fuel is seeping or dripping from this area, it's a symptom of internal flooding, usually caused by:

    • Float level set too high

    • A leaking or stuck needle & seat

    • Heavy or saturated float (especially common with nitrophyl floats)

    • Debris in the needle & seat, preventing proper sealing

    • Fuel pressure too high (exceeding 4–5 PSI can overwhelm the inlet valve)

    • Lifter Link Gasket is Missing

There are 2 types of gaskets. One is thicker than the other. For the thicker one there will be a cutout for it to fit into. For no cutout, use the thinner gasket.

    • Bowl or top is so warped that fuel is spilling over on rough roads.

When the fuel level in the float bowl rises too high, it can spill through passages not meant to carry fuel under static conditions—such as the pump bore or through the top gasket area.

What to check and do:

  1. Inspect and adjust float level to specification.

  2. Test the needle and seat—make sure it seals shut when the float rises.

  3. Check the float for leaks or swelling—shake it for sloshing fuel or weigh it compared to spec.

  4. Examine fuel pressure—use a fuel pressure gauge if using an electric or high-volume pump.

Summary:

Yes—fuel leaking from the pump lifter link on a Carter YF typically indicates the bowl is overfilling, which leads to internal fuel overflow. Start by verifying the float setting and needle/seat integrity to prevent flooding. Be sure to replace the carb part when taking it apart- Mike's YF Carburetor Parts
