The most common carb-related causes (and what to do)

1. Dead or weak accelerator pump

Symptom

  • You have to crank forever

  • Engine only fires with starting fluid

  • Once running, it’s fine

Why it happens

  • Pump diaphragm is stiff, torn, or ethanol-damaged

  • Check ball isn’t sealing

  • Pump circuit not delivering fuel on crank

Quick test

  • Look down the carb (engine off)

  • Snap the throttle

  • No fuel squirt = problem

Fix

  • Rebuild the carb

  • Replace the accelerator pump (use ethanol-safe parts)

  • Properly seat the pump check ball (light tap with brass punch)

2. Float / needle & seat problem

Symptom

  • Fuel dribbling into the intake after shutdown

  • Gas smell

  • Wet plugs

  • Raw fuel found in the manifold

Why it happens

  • Float set too high

  • Needle not sealing

  • Debris from ethanol fuel

Fix

  • Set float level to spec (don’t eyeball it)

  • Replace needle & seat

  • Install a fuel filter before the carb

3. Choke not working correctly

Symptom

  • Cold engine won’t start

  • Warm engine starts OK

  • You have to feather the throttle constantly

Why it happens

  • Choke plate not closing when cold

  • Electric choke not getting power

  • Choke pull-off leaking

Fix

  • Verify choke plate fully closes cold

  • Check 12V power to electric choke (key ON)

  • Test choke pull-off with a hand vacuum pump

4. Internal fuel bleed or leaking power valve

Symptom

  • Hard starting hot and cold

  • Engine loads up

  • Black smoke after startup

Why it happens

  • Power valve or enrichment circuit leaking fuel constantly

  • Common on older carbs or marine carbs with long sit times

Fix

  • Full carb rebuild

  • Replace power valve or enrichment assembly

5. Heat soak / percolation

Symptom

  • Won’t restart after shutdown

  • Acts flooded

  • Cranks fine, won’t fire

Why it happens

  • Fuel boils in the bowl

  • Float vents dump fuel into intake

Fix

  • Correct float level

  • Use proper marine carb spacer

  • Ensure correct fuel pressure (marine carbs hate excess pressure)

What you should do—step by step

  1. Check accelerator pump squirt

  2. Inspect choke operation cold

  3. Pull the carb and rebuild it

    • Ethanol-safe gaskets

    • New accelerator pump

    • Needle & seat

    • Power valve (if equipped)

  4. Set float level exactly to spec

  5. Verify fuel pressure (usually 4–6 PSI for most marine carbs)
