WCFB Bowl Vent

Purpose of the Carter WCFB Bowl Vent

The bowl vent on a Carter WCFB serves two critical mechanical functions: maintaining the atmospheric pressure required for precise fuel metering, and preventing vapor lock by giving expanding fuel vapors an escape route.

Pressure Balancing (The Physics of Flow)

Carburetors operate entirely on pressure differentials. For fuel to flow through the main jets and out the discharge nozzles, the pressure inside the float bowl must be higher than the low-pressure vacuum created inside the venturi.

  • The bowl vent keeps the pressure above the fuel at a stable, atmospheric level.

  • If the vent passage gets clogged by dirt or varnish, the dropping fuel level (as the engine runs) will pull a vacuum inside the sealed bowl. This internal vacuum fights the venturi vacuum, slowing or completely stopping fuel flow and starving the engine under load.

Anti-Percolation and Heat Soak

Managing fuel boiling (percolation) is the vent's other main job, especially during heat soak. When a hot engine is shut down, heat radiating from the intake manifold bakes the carburetor.

  • As the trapped fuel heats up and vaporizes, the vent gives this expanding pressure a harmless exit.

  • Without a clear vent passage, the vapor pressure would push down on the liquid fuel, forcing raw gas through the metering circuits, out the nozzles, and down into the intake manifold. This causes flooding, strong fuel odors, and the classic "hard hot-start".

BOWL VAPOR VENT ADJUSTMENT

1. Install dust cover and dust cover gasket.
2. With throttle valves seated, there should be the clear¬
ance (F) as listed on carbureter specification page
between lower edge of bowl vapor vent valve and dust
To adjust, remove dust cover and bend vapor cover,
