A rough idle in a Toyota vehicle can be caused by a number of issues, including a malfunctioning fuel injector. The fuel injector is responsible for delivering the correct amount of fuel to the engine at the right time and under the right conditions. If the fuel injector is not functioning properly, it can cause the engine to run poorly, resulting in a rough idle. Other possible causes of a rough idle in a Toyota vehicle include a faulty spark plug, a malfunctioning ignition system, a clogged air filter, or a problem with the fuel pump.

To diagnose the cause of a rough idle in a Toyota vehicle, it may be necessary to perform some basic troubleshooting steps. These may include checking the spark plugs, inspecting the ignition system, and checking the fuel pump and fuel filter. If these steps do not reveal the cause of the problem, it may be necessary to have the vehicle professionally diagnosed by a mechanic or dealership service department. They will be able to perform more advanced diagnostic tests to determine the cause of the rough idle and recommend the appropriate repair.

Prelim Check

  • Check all fuel lines for kinks or leaks. Is there gas in the gas tank?
  • Turn the ignition key to on and listen for the fuel pump inside the gas tank. You should here it whirr. Turn the key off and one a few times to test the pump.
  • No whirr? Remove the access cover to the gas tank and using a voltmeter test the current coming into the gas tank for 12v.

  • If the power is OK and the pump is not making noise then replace the pump.
  • If no power check the fuel pump circuit for problems. Check the fuse and EFI main relay.
    • The main relay, also known as the fuel pump relay or EFI (electronic fuel injection) relay, is a crucial component of a vehicle's fuel injection system. It is responsible for controlling the flow of electricity to the fuel pump, which is responsible for delivering fuel to the engine. The main relay is typically located in the engine compartment and is controlled by the vehicle's engine control module (ECM).

The main relay can fail due to age or wear and tear, or it may be damaged by an electrical issue. If the main relay fails, it can cause the fuel pump to stop working, which can result in a variety of issues, including difficulty starting the vehicle, stalling, and a lack of power. To diagnose a problem with the main relay, it may be necessary to perform some basic troubleshooting steps, such as checking the fuel pump and fuel filter, inspecting the electrical connections, and performing a continuity test on the main relay itself. If these steps do not reveal the cause of the problem, it may be necessary to have the vehicle professionally diagnosed by a mechanic or dealership service department. They will be able to perform more advanced diagnostic tests to determine the cause of the issue and recommend the appropriate repair.

  • Replace the fuel filter. A partially clogged filter will cause poor fuel injection operation.

Rough Idle

Toyota Fuel Injection
Obviously the Toyota electrical system can cause a rough idle as well as the fuel injectors.
  • Check all ground connections of the engine and fuel system wiring. A dirty ground, or loose connection will certainly cause fuel injector problems.
  • The ECU depends on a fully charged battery. A bad battery can cause injector problems.
    • The ECU, or engine control unit, is a computer that is responsible for controlling various systems in a vehicle's engine. It receives input from sensors located throughout the vehicle and uses this information to adjust the engine's performance in real-time. The ECU is essentially the "brain" of the vehicle's engine, and it plays a vital role in maintaining optimal performance and fuel efficiency.

Some of the functions that the ECU controls include ignition timing, fuel injection, and emissions control. It also monitors various systems and components within the vehicle, such as the engine temperature, exhaust gas composition, and air/fuel ratio. If the ECU detects a problem with any of these systems or components, it can trigger a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) and turn on the check engine light.

  • Does the air filter need replacing? A dirty filter will restrict air flow.
  • Check the fuses. Replace any blown fuse. If it blows again, then you have a short in the wiring.
  • Check the air intake from the air cleaner down to the intake manifold. Any leaks will cause a lean condition.
  • Check the air intake for any carbon residue. Clean with carburetor cleaner and toothbrush.
  • With the engine running check each injector using a stethoscope, or long screw driver and listen for a clicking noise.
  • Further testing of the injector can be done with a noid light. Each injector should flash the noid light.
  • With the engine off and injector electrical connector disconnected, test each injector for resistance. This is done by connecting the ohm meter across the injector terminals. Toyota specifications are here.
