Testing Your Vehicle Fuel Injectors With Noid Lights

Test Your Fuel Injectors

Contrary to common misconception, fuel injector testing isn’t complex. You can test the working of your fuel injector simply with Noid light. It is a small electronic device that allows you to determine if your fuel injectors are receiving electrical signals quickly.

A fuel injector system sends power and switching signals to the fuel injector. You can use a Noid Light kit to verify visually that the fuel injector is receiving power and the pulse signals. However, the Noid light does not confirm a faulty fuel injector.

This guide explains how to use Noid light to test injectors for your vehicle. However, before we move forward, it is important to understand the basic working of fuel injectors.

Basic Working of A Fuel Injector

A fuel injector is a modern-day equivalent of a carburetor used in older vehicles. These small electromechanical devices spray fuel right in front of the intake manifold located in front of the intake valve. Small hypodermic holes for atomizing fuel surrounded by a high-micron filter are on the bottom of the injector. Injectors spray fuel on the intake valve from either the inlet manifold or the cylinder head by screwing them in nozzle-first.

The fuel injector computer controls fuel injectors. As soon as you turn on the key, they receive continuous power. The computer completes a grounding circuit, allowing the injector to open and close. The computer determines the correct amount of fuel to inject based on the information received from sensors. With a two-stroke engine, injectors open and close at the same RPM, and with a four-stroke engine, half as fast.

Identifying Fuel Injection Issues

Occasionally, a vehicle may experience misfiring, a no-start condition, a jumpy engine, rough idling, and other conditions. Using the Fuel Injector Noid Light, you can determine if fuel injectors are getting power and pulse signals. The Noid light test and several others can help identify the root cause of misfiring or no-starting on your vehicle.

While the tool cannot diagnose whether a fuel injector is malfunctioning, it can verify that pulse and power signals reach the injector. If any of the signals is missing, the fuel injector will not function.

How to Use Noid Lights?

Connectors on fuel injectors vary from vehicle to vehicle. Consequently, when testing fuel injectors, you need to select a fuel injector Noid light that fits comfortably into the fuel injector connector.

?In the first step, you must disconnect the fuel injector you want to test from its electrical connector.

?The connector is secured to the fuel injector by a metal clip. By pressing the metal clip down, you can unlock the connector.

?Press the plastic locking tab embedded in the connector as you gently pull back on it.

?Remove the fuel injector connector and insert the Noid light.

?It should quickly fit into the fuel injector.

?Don't force the Noid light into the fuel injector. If it doesn’t fit, use another one.

?When you are ready, ask a helper to turn the engine on while you remain at a safe distance.

Testing the Injector With Noid Light

  1. Suppose the Noid light stays on when the key is on or cranking; it indicates either writing is shorted to ground or a problem with the computer driver.

  1. In case the Noid light does not blink, examine the pulse of the fuel injectors across multiple cylinders. Perhaps, it's just a circuit problem.

  1. With the engine running and the key on, determine whether the fuel injector receives power. A malfunction in the computer is likely preventing the injector from operating, and further testing will be necessary to determine the cause.

  1. When the engine is running, you must constantly see the Noid light blinking on and off. It is a positive sign indicating your fuel injector works properly (getting both power and pulse signals). You should repeat this process for all the injectors, and the Noid light must flash identically.

5.On a poorly-running four-cylinder engine, sometimes unplugging each connector is enough to determine which cylinder has the problem. Disconnecting a functioning injector will make it run even worse; disconnecting a malfunctioning injector won't make any difference. However, this is not an incredibly reliable method. It can be difficult to discern a difference in how they idle on six and eight-cylinder engines.

Other Ways to Test Fuel Injectors

Besides Noid light testing, there are several other ways to test fuel injectors conveniently. Here are three of them:

?Listen to Clicking Sound

Injectors that function properly make a constant clicking noise. The clicking sound is shallow, but you can listen to them by placing one end of a screwdriver against your ear and the other against the injector.

You can hear the clicking noise using the screwdriver as a makeshift telescope. The injector is likely defective if it is not clicking or is clicking sporadically.

?Circuit Power Test

You can also measure the voltage to the injector to ensure it receives power. The positive voltage on the positive side remains constant by switching on and off the ground.

You can measure voltage by placing the red meter lead on the positive pin of the 2-pin connector. Connect the meter's negative lead using the battery's negative terminal. When you turn on the key, it generates voltage, indicating the injector is working properly.

?Ground Trigger Test

Through the PCM (Power Control Module), a ground pulse is applied to the negative wire of the injector to control it.

The positive side voltage is constant for the injector to work, and the negative ground side is turned on and off. To determine if the circuit is receiving positive and negative voltage, we can use a 12-V light test.

Some manufacturers, however, use less voltage to operate injectors that will trigger 12-V lights. It is possible to trace the ground wire to the PCM and check to ensure it is not open or shorted.

Purchasing Noid lights

As manufacturers have different connector designs, Noid lights are usually sold as a set. Most have lights to suit connectors on standard vehicles such as Chevy and Ford, as well as Bosch injection systems. As with all tools, these can be a worthwhile investment for anyone who does a little work on their vehicle.

Summary

The fuel-injected car engines are highly effective and significantly improved over carburetors used decades ago. However, fuel injectors are also prone to issues. The Noid Light test is very helpful in testing if your fuel injectors are getting the power and switching signals and are working correctly.
