How the Aisan idle cut-off (fuel shutoff) solenoid works
Short version: it’s an electrically controlled fuel valve whose only job is to shut off idle fuel when the key is off. No magic, no tuning voodoo.
What it does (plain and simple)
On Aisan carburetors—commonly used on older Toyota engines—the shutoff solenoid blocks the idle fuel passage unless it’s powered.
-
Key ON ? solenoid gets 12V ? plunger retracts ? idle fuel flows ? engine idles
-
Key OFF ? power removed ? spring pushes plunger out ? idle fuel blocked ? engine stops cleanly
That’s it.
Why it exists
Carbureted engines can diesel (run on after shutdown) because hot carbon deposits ignite leftover fuel.
The solenoid kills idle fuel instantly, so the engine shuts down instead of coughing, chugging, or rattling itself to death.
How it works internally
Inside the solenoid:
-
An electromagnetic coil
-
A spring-loaded plunger (needle)
-
A sealed body that threads into the carb
When energized, the coil pulls the plunger back against the spring. When power is lost, the spring wins and shuts fuel off.
Common failure symptoms (this is where people get burned)
If the solenoid fails closed:
-
Engine starts but won’t idle
-
Engine dies as soon as you release the throttle
-
Feels like a vacuum leak or bad idle mixture (it’s not)
If it fails open:
-
Engine runs fine
-
May diesel on shutdown
-
You won’t notice until the engine starts running-on
Loose wire? Same symptoms as a dead solenoid.
Quick bench test (takes 10 seconds)
-
Remove the solenoid
-
Touch 12V to the terminal, ground the body
-
You should hear a sharp click
-
No click = bad solenoid
Weak click = intermittent failure (replace it)
No click on the vehicle? Check ignition-switched power, not constant battery power.
Important notes people miss
-
It only affects the idle circuit
? main jets, power system, and accelerator pump are unaffected -
It is not adjustable
-
Dirt or varnish in the tip can make it stick—cleaning sometimes works, replacement works every time
-
Running without it is a band-aid, not a fix
Bottom line
If an Aisan-equipped engine:
-
runs great off-idle
-
but won’t idle unless you keep your foot in it
Don’t touch the mixture screws.
Check the shutoff solenoid first.
