Frequently Asked Questions – Carburetor Rebuild Kits

What is included in a typical carburetor rebuild kit?

Most rebuild kits include gaskets, needle and seat, accelerator pump, check balls, and other small parts needed to restore carburetor performance. In some premium type kits a float, springs & other specialized part can be included.

How do I know which rebuild kit fits my carburetor?

Identify your carburetor model by the number stamped on the body or mounting flange. Match it with the part number listed in the product description or use our carburetor number lookup tool. Also look for a tag attached to the top of the carburetor. With no tag and not stamped number, matching the old parts will be the only way.

Do NOT go by the application. Some applications used multiple carburetor numbers and carburetors are swapped often.

Can I use a rebuild kit with ethanol-blended fuel?

Yes. Most modern kits use ethanol-resistant materials designed to withstand today’s fuel blends, reducing the risk of swelling or deterioration.

Do I need special tools to rebuild my carburetor?

Basic hand tools are usually sufficient, though a small pick, a screwdriver set, and a clean workspace are recommended. A rebuild guide or service manual can also be helpful.

Will rebuilding my carburetor fix hard starting or stalling issues?

Yes, a properly rebuilt carburetor can solve many common issues such as hard starting, rough idle, fuel leaks, poor fuel economy, and hesitation under throttle.

How long does it take to rebuild a carburetor?

Most carburetor rebuilds take between 1 to 3 hours depending on experience, complexity of the carburetor, and whether additional cleaning or repairs are needed.

Is it better to buy a rebuild kit or a remanufactured carburetor?

If your carburetor body is in good condition, a rebuild kit is a cost-effective solution. However, if the carburetor is cracked, warped, or corroded beyond repair, replacement may be a better option.

Are main jets included in carburetor kits?

No, that would cause a kit to be useful for only 1 carburetor number. One kit can cover a hundred carburetor numbers. Jets depend on which carburetor number.

A carburetor rebuild kit is a set of parts that can be used to repair or rebuild a carburetor. These kits typically include gaskets, seals, and other small parts that may wear out or become damaged over time. They may also include instructions for rebuilding the carburetor.

There are many different carburetor rebuild kits available on the market, designed for a wide variety of makes and models of vehicles. It is important to choose a kit that is specifically designed for your carburetor, as using the wrong parts can result in poor performance or damage to your engine.

Do you want the best available carburetor rebuild kit?

If so, then Mike's carburetor parts is the place to go. Our carburetor kits are US made, ethanol ready and meets or exceeds manufactures recommendation. You won't find better kits anywhere.

We don't sell NOS, or kits not currently in production. These types of old kits can be problematic. Old dried gaskets can leak gas and not fit exactly right as they have shrunk.

We buy from several suppliers, build our own kits and buy some already assembled. We are fussy about the quality and are constantly testing parts we don't have experience with.

Carburetor rebuild kits are not the same as 40 years ago. Back in the day you bought a kit for the year & make of the car. They often included main jets, floats and other brass parts. Over the years manufactures consolidated carburetor kits in order to reduce inventory and production costs. Main jets were the 1st to go because jets are year, make, engine specific. Removing the floats and extra brass parts also helped consolidated kits. The result is that we have available a lot less kits with wider coverage.

At Mike's we have consolidated several kits even further. By adding a gasket here and a gasket there we have been able to combine kits. What this has done is make it easier for the customer to buy the correct kit.

Several of our carburetor kits have a premium add-on that you can add to the basic kit. These premium add-ons include things like floats, springs and sometimes screws to help you bring your carburetor back to a new like condition.

For example our Mercarb marine carburetor kit has been consolidated so that it works with all Mercarb carburetors. No guessing on which kit. You will get the correct kit at the start.

Most kits include an electronic rebuild manual that will give you illustrations and rebuilding help the average instruction sheet included with most kits don't give you.
And if you haven't found them yet, we have an extensive library of carburetor help videos on YouTube

Buy Carburetor Rebuild Kits

Buying kits by application instead of using the carburetor number.

The consumer has been trained over the years to ask for a part by year, make and model. This doesn't work so well with carburetor parts. These days it is rare for a vehicle to have the original carburetor installed. Just because a carburetor is mounted on a certain vehicle doesn't mean a certain carburetor rebuild kit will fit. Carburetor kits are made to fit a group of carburetor numbers, not the application.
How to buy a carburetor kit?

Why Do I Need the Carburetor Number?

You need the carburetor number to get the correct carburetor rebuild kit because carburetors can vary significantly in their design and parts from one model to another. Even if two carburetors look very similar on the outside, they may have different internal components and specifications that require different parts.

By providing the carburetor number to a supplier or manufacturer of carburetor rebuild kits, they can identify the correct kit for your specific carburetor model. The carburetor number is usually located on a tag or stamped into the body of the carburetor itself, and it identifies the specific model and production year of the carburetor.

Using the correct rebuild kit is important because it ensures that the new parts will fit properly and function correctly in your carburetor, improving performance and preventing potential problems down the line. If you use the wrong kit, you may end up with parts that don't fit or don't work properly, leading to poor engine performance, reduced fuel economy, and potential damage to your engine.

Where is the carburetor number?

We have illustration of most carburetors that will show you where to look for the carburetor number.
