If the Autolite/Motorcraft 1100 has fuel sitting in the bowl but nothing is making it into the venturi, you’re down to a short list of failures. Here’s the blunt, practical breakdown.
1. Accelerator pump not moving fuel
Quick test: look straight down the carb and snap the throttle.
If you get zero pump shot, the engine will act dead-lean and won’t start without choke.
Usual causes:
-
Pump cup shrunk or torn (common if it’s a rubber cup and the fuel sat too long)
-
Pump well check valve stuck
-
Pump linkage misassembled or not engaging the pump arm
-
Incorrect pump cup (seen a lot with mismatched kits)
2. Main nozzle / discharge check ball stuck
The 1100 has a check ball under the main discharge.
If it’s stuck shut, no fuel gets drawn up the main well.
Symptoms:
-
Starts on choke only
-
Won’t fuel under throttle
-
No response even though bowl is full
You can confirm by gently blowing through the main well (after removing the venturi cluster). If it’s blocked, you’ll feel resistance.
3. Venturi cluster clogged
The 1100’s venturi cluster is notorious for:
-
Green ethanol varnish
-
Fine debris
-
The tiny emulsion bleeds plugging up
If those top passages are clogged, no fuel will atomize.
Pull the cluster and check every drilled passage with wire gauge bits or a bristle.
4. Float level WAY too low
Yes, the bowl is full, but if the level is too low the internal pickup for the main well may not be submerged enough to pull fuel under vacuum.
1100 float spec is typically 1 1/8" (varies by tag number), but if the float is bent low, it starves the main well even with fuel present.
5. Severely low vacuum signal
If the throttle plates aren’t closing properly or the idle transfer slots are over-exposed (throttle blade cracked open too far), the main circuit never gets enough signal to pull fuel.
Also check:
-
Loose power valve gasket ? internal vacuum leak inside carb
-
Base gasket vacuum leak ? weak signal
Spray a little starting fluid:
-
If it runs briefly, the carb isn’t delivering fuel at all.
-
If it still won’t fire, you have an ignition or timing issue on top of this.
6. Stuck needle under the main nozzle
Some 1100 versions have a tiny spring-loaded needle under the venturi cluster. If it sticks shut, no main circuit flow.
Quick Diagnostic Steps (Do These in 5 Minutes)
-
Snap throttle ? do you get a pump squirt?
-
Remove venturi cluster ? is it clogged?
-
Check main discharge check ball ? does it rattle freely?
-
Check float level.
-
Blow through main well passage ? blocked or open?
