The Most Common Causes (In Order of Likelihood)
1. Vacuum Leak (By Far the #1 Cause)
If extra air is entering the engine after the throttle plates, the idle mixture screw becomes irrelevant.
Typical leak points on Carter B&B carbs:
-
Throttle shaft bushings worn (very common)
-
Base gasket leaking
-
Carburetor mounting flange warped
-
Cracked or leaking vacuum fittings
-
Intake manifold gasket leak
Quick test:
At idle, spray carb cleaner around the base, throttle shaft, and vacuum ports.
If RPM changes ? you found the problem.
Worn throttle shafts alone can make the mixture screw completely useless.
2. Throttle Plates Open Too Far
If the curb idle screw is turned in too far, the engine is pulling fuel from the main circuit, not the idle circuit.
What happens:
-
Idle mixture screw does nothing
-
Engine still runs with mixture screw seated
-
High or unstable idle
Fix:
-
Back the idle speed screw out until the throttle plates are almost fully closed
-
Reset idle speed only after mixture adjustment
3. Idle Circuit Is Plugged
Carter B&B idle passages are small and clog easily.
Common blockage areas:
-
Idle feed restriction
-
Idle discharge ports
-
Transfer slots
Important:
Blowing air through the carb is not enough. You must:
-
Remove plugs if equipped
-
Physically clean passages with carb wire and solvent
If the idle circuit is blocked, turning the screw changes nothing—because no fuel is flowing.
4. Idle Mixture Screw or Seat Damaged
If someone cranked the screw in hard at some point, the tapered tip or seat may be ruined.
Signs:
-
Screw spins but idle doesn’t change
-
Visible groove or blunt tip on the screw
-
Carb only runs with screw nearly out or fully in
Once the seat is damaged, adjustment accuracy is gone.
5. Incorrect or Missing Idle Mixture Screw Parts
Yes, this happens more than you’d think.
Check for:
-
Correct screw length and taper
-
Spring present under the screw
-
No extra washer blocking the passage
Wrong screw = wrong taper = no control.
6. Internal Carb Warpage
Carter B&B bodies are pot metal. Overheating and overtightening warp them.
Results:
-
Internal vacuum leaks
-
Idle passages no longer align
-
Mixture screw ineffective no matter what
At that point, rebuilding alone won’t fix it.
Simple Diagnostic Checklist
If you want a fast answer, do this:
-
Warm engine fully
-
Set idle speed low (600–700 RPM if possible)
-
Turn idle mixture screw all the way in
-
Engine should stumble or stall
-
If it doesn’t ? you are not on the idle circuit
-
-
Check for vacuum leaks
-
Inspect throttle shaft play
-
Clean idle passages properly
Bottom Line
If adjusting the Carter B&B idle mixture screw has no effect:
-
You have a vacuum leak
-
The throttle plates are open too far
-
The idle circuit is blocked
-
Or the carb body is worn or damaged
- The idle speed is set too high bypassing the idle circuit.
There is no mystery setting and no magic screw position.
Fix the root cause and the mixture screw will suddenly work again—exactly like it’s supposed to.
