Despite what many people think, fuel injectors are not a new technology. The first fuel injectors were patented by American mechanical engineer and inventor George Balley Brayton in 1872.
Although the potential of this technology was promising, it was not until World War II that the first gasoline fuel injectors were mass-produced for use on some fighter aircraft. After the war, Bosch developed the first fuel injectors for automobiles in the 1950s. In fact, the beautiful and legendary Mercedes-Benz 300SL had the honor of being the first mass-produced car to use fuel injectors in 1955. The results of this gull-winged bolide triggered interest in developing injector-based fuel systems. However, the systems we know today were still years away.
The challenge faced by early fuel injectors was the lack of adequate metering systems. The carburetors of the time were remarkably more efficient in adapting to any driving conditions, while the injectors relied on very inefficient mechanical metering and control systems.
It was not until the 1980s that electronics and computers enabled the development of electronic fuel injection (EFI) systems. The rest is history.
Rising oil prices and concerns about environmental pollution brought the first emissions regulations in the United States and the rest of the world. These strong regulations were the beginning of the end for carburetors, which prompted the use of EFI systems in all types of vehicles.
