Zenith 61, 161 Idle System

Tuning Dynamics (The Adjusting Needle)

Adjusting the needle screw alters the ratio of air to fuel by manipulating internal circuit suction:

  • Turning the Needle IN (Clockwise): Restricts the air passage, creating greater suction on the idle jet. This draws more fuel and less air, creating a richer mixture.

  • Turning the Needle OUT (Counter-Clockwise): Admits more air into the passage, which decreases the vacuum pull on the idle jet. This results in a leaner mixture.

Service Note: When rebuilding, the baseline initial adjustment is to gently seat the idle needle and then back it out exactly 1-1/4 full turns before starting the engine for final warm-up tuning.
